Where are you based?
I’m based in Manhattan, New York; and I’m available for travel.
What kind of photographer are you?
I am a lifestyle portrait photographer specializing in maternity, newborn and family photography. I do not pose my newborns and do not use any props. I use natural light exclusively and all my newborn sessions occur in my families' home. I believe in documenting life and giving the gift of memories to the next generation. This is why I love capturing the emotions and bonds that connect families. I aim to capture the joy of new parents, but also the incredible connection that links children to their parents.
why do you photograph in black & white?
I photograph in black and white because I value art and believe black and white photographs are timeless. There is no distraction within a black and white photograph, there is something 'raw' about it; which allows emotions and connections to be the main focus. I actually wrote a blog post on this topic, you can read more here.
Where will my session takes place?
I am an in-home photographer, meaning the session will occur in the comfort of your home. I will be coming to you.
How long does a session last?
It depends on the session you have selected, but in general terms maternity sessions are the fastest (around an hour), family session usually last 90 minutes; whilst the newborn and baby sessions last longer to allow for feeding time and other little things that come with the territory! Please refer to The Experience page for more information on my sessions.
What will my portrait session be like?
The session will occur in the morning.
At my arrival we will take a moment to chat and get to know each other a bit better; also allowing me to meet the small family members. If I haven't had any previous contact with dad prior to the session day, I will focus on him and get him involved in the experience. If you have small children, this is when I will start building their trust (while my camera is still in my bag).
Then we will move to the room with the best lighting and I'll take my camera out.
I will ask you to interact with each other and if you are nervous or overwhelmed I will direct you a bit to help you relax. If there is more than one room with good lighting we might move to take a few photographs there too.
You can ask any questions you may still have during the session, however we usually went through most of them at this point (either during the phone consultation or during our chat at my arrival).
I do not let my watch lead the session and I don't push my families, so as soon as I feel that we have reached the 'photo-shoot energy' limit I will stop shooting. Don't worry by then I usually have captured plenty of photographs already.
Once done we'll have a quick chat to discuss the next step before I leave, and you can go on with the rest of your day.
When to book a maternity session?
It is best to book it for when you are around 36 weeks pregnant. That being said if you wish to have it before or after, fine by me.
When to book a newborn session?
To make the best out of the session I would recommend booking the session at the two weeks mark. The reasons behind it are that is gives mum the time to start healing, and up until then, newborns sleep more so the session will go smoother. However, beautiful and timeless portraits of your baby can be made at any time and I’m always happy to stop for feeds, nappy change etc.; so feel free to contact me at any stage of your baby's life.
If possible, I recommend to contact me while you are still pregnant.
Will I have to choose from a collection of photographs?
All the photographs I will show you are included with the session fees (you can expect 25+ images - the final number varies on each session).
Will I get the digital photographs from my session?
Yes. You will have access to a private online gallery with your collection of images that you will be able to download, along with a personal use print release.
How can I order prints and products from you?
You will have the opportunity to order beautiful matted or framed prints and heirloom albums at the time of booking, or again after viewing your images.
At the time of the session we will go through any questions you may have on this after reading the guide I would have provided you with at the time of booking.
What to wear on the day of the session?
An outfit in which you are comfortable. Besides that, I recommend avoiding clothing with large logos or designs as it can be a distraction; and keeping the clothing for the whole family in the same spirit (i.e. smart, casual, smart-casual etc.) and similar color tones.
More tips will be included in my Session Planning Guide which you will receive with your booking confirmation. In the meantime, you can read more on this topic on on my blog.
What happens if my child is ill?
If your child is ill, then I ask you to let me know as soon as possible and we can postpone your session.
